Energy Share of Wyoming was started in by a small group of utilities. The program was created in response to a growing need to help individuals and families that were falling through the cracks of traditional assistance programs. The program began with seed money donated by the founding utilities – Montana-Dakota Utilities, Rocky Mountain Power, and Black Hills Energy. A partnership was formed with the Salvation Army to issue and review applications as well as assess applicant eligibility. Soon, additional utilities, energy companies and municipalities became involved with the program; Wyoming Rural Electric Association, Dominion Energy, Powder River Energy Corp., Rocky Mountain PERC, City of Gillette, City of Powell, Town of Lusk and others. Over the years, generous donations have also been provided by utility customers and other community partners. Members of the board of directors, which is comprised of volunteers from utilities and other organizations, were committed to ensuring that ESW operates with minimal overhead so the monies raised would assist the hard-working people of Wyoming. A commitment that still stands today.
Energy Share continues to operate with an all-volunteer board and all operating expenses are paid with corporate donations. True to our Wyoming roots that are grounded in self-reliance and the philosophy that neighbors help each other, utility customers throughout the state continue to donate money to help those in need. In addition, sponsoring utilities and organizations are committed to helping their customers during tough times by donating money and services to Energy Share of Wyoming.
